Life in a student flat starts rough but gets colourful. The flat looked more squat than home, but we dragged in whatever we could find. Flat-pack breaks too quick, so we begged, borrowed and carried. Another dragged a chair from Camden. Nothing matched the walls, but that’s why it worked. Vintage sofas feel alive, and it doesn’t matter if it’s scratched. I’ve fallen asleep in a battered armchair with a book, contemporary leather armchair and those seats carried us.

Shoreditch is perfect for this life, and dealers live for it. My flatmate dragged me into Smithers, and retro style sofa bed the vintage armchairs carried scars I loved. We couldn’t afford much, but it’s survived three house parties and a flood. We’ve all shoved sofas through windows. it’s half the fun. Retro sofas don’t care if you spill. Modern stuff? Forget it, but retro lasts. every wobble tells the truth. After exams and chaos, the dodgy landlord fades away, but the armchair stays in your mind.

So if you’re moving to London, don’t waste time on the soulless new. Pick up a sofa vintage retro armchair, and let it carry your student nights.
