Cricket was less well-established in Tasmania, then known as Van Diemen’s Land. Perth radio station 96FM (6NOW) also carried the Triple M identity and 6MMM callsign in the early 1990s but was then sold to Southern Cross Broadcasting who changed the station’s identity back to its original name. Australia’s undefeated run during the 2003 Cricket World Cup saw Glenn McGrath take 7/15 against Namibia and Andy Bichel 7/20 against England for the two best returns at the World Cup. England won the Test series 2-1 and Sri Lanka won the ODI series 3-0. The second Test, played at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy, was highly controversial because of incompetent umpiring by B. C. Cooray whose errors probably cost Sri Lanka the match and the series. Both catches were off the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan who took 13 wickets in the match. After he entered the University of Colombo in 1996, Sangakkara joined Nondescripts who were one of the city’s most notable clubs and he spent most of his domestic career, until 2014, with them. Playing as a specialist batter, he scored only 6 in his one innings.
Melbourne dominated the 1950s, playing a record seven consecutive grand finals from 1954 to 1960, and winning five premierships, including three in a row from 1955 to 1957.
