What’s most interesting about this development is that it appears to be the first Triple-A release, AKA a full-priced game, to simply be a code in a box. For what it’s worth, Just Dance 2023 is also a code in the box, though it’s fairly niche and linked web site not on the level of Black Myth. The practice is often seen on Nintendo Switch releases, where the game is played off the cloud , or where it doesn’t fit on a single cart. Otherwise, outside bundled digital copies with a console purchase , or “Game of the Year” editions that often have the DLC as a voucher , this would appear to be a first.
First and foremost, Black Myth: Wukong takes heavy inspiration from the beloved Soulsike genre . Therefore, based on that and clear footage from trailers, there will be an emphasis on larger-than-life boss battles that are designed to put players through the ringer. Intense head-to-head encounters are the beating heart at the center of the Soulslike genre, and Black Myth: Wukong seems to have plenty of white-knuckle combat in st
Ever since Black Myth: Wukong was first revealed, it’s managed to build up both a cult following and massive amounts of hype. I hadn’t initially been on the bandwagon, despite loving the source material (anything even distantly related to Dragon Ball can’t be bad, after all) and having a lot of respect for the Soulslike ge
Players were given 30 minutes to try and defeat four of the game’s different bosses, with most people I spoke to only managing to defeat two of them. The Elite Macaque Chief and Tiger Vanguard were two of the more popular bosses, with Game Science saying the Tiger was the harder of the two, but a member of the public sharing that “actually, the Monkey was hard
I’m not trying to talk anyone out of playing Wukong (though I do recommend you at least inform yourself about the allegations of discrimination and harassment at Game Science ). It’s a Soulslike through and through and I expect it will be popular with fans of the genre. But if Erdtree is too hard for you because the bosses are relentless, I’m sorry to say it, but Wukong isn’t going to treat you any ni
I, frankly, couldn’t handle the wait, nor did my scummy press pass count for much for this particular game, so I figured I’d do the next best thing and get impressions of those who had actually managed to play it at Gamescom. Here’s what I uncove
Imagine my surprise the next day when, while blearily stumbling around the show floor and scoping out what was there before the big crowds could put me off ever venturing past the press area, I saw that Black Myth: Wukong was not only playable at Gamescom, but had one of the biggest booths of the whole show, towering above the likes of Mortal Kombat 1 and Payda
From talking to other FromSoft experts, I’ve gathered that Erdtree’s fights aren’t as easy to brute force as other fights. In our discussion video last week, reviewer James Troughton explained that their plan to stagger enemies with blunt weapons wasn’t as effective as they’d hoped, but when they switched to a more hybrid build with magic options, they had a lot more success. They also used the Mimic Tear Spirit Summon to distract bosses, and when they weren’t strong enough to beat a boss, they farmed Scadutree Fragments until they w
With appointments to keep and big gamer rizz to spread across Gamescom, I trudged away defeated and resolved to go back even earlier the next day to beat the rush and make sure I got some time with the show’s surprising superstar, which strangely didn’t have any presence or opportunities for press. You’ve read the title so you’ve hopefully figured out where this is going. The queue was somehow even bigger the next day, with signs indicating wait times between two to four hours before the sun had even ri
Maybe some stubborn people just don’t want to engage with the game’s RPG mechanics. Maybe they got used to hammering away at a fight until they perfected it and didn’t need to spend time grinding levels or tailoring their builds, and now they resent having to adapt to a fight rather than overcome it through sheer will. I don’t know, I’m just a tourist, but what I do know is that if you’re unhappy with Erdtree’s difficulty, you need to stay far away from Black Myth: Wuk
The trailers for Black Myth: Wukong have confirmed that cloud traversal will play some sort of role in the game. To what extent cloud traversal will play is unclear, but it must play a decent-sized role for it to be featured in the trailer. Cloud traversal is another exciting feature Black Myth: Wukong has taken from Journey to the West , further demonstrating that the game seems to be staying pretty close to its source mater
WIth that said, it would be remiss to discuss Black Myth: Wukong without mentioning that its studio, Game Science, has been accused of fostering a sexist work environment . Yang Qi, the studio’s co-founder, once wrote a lengthy sexist post that touched on the biological differences between men and women as it pertains to games . To our knowledge, the studio has not responded to these accusations.
